Getting to Know “The Maestro” Benjermin Butler

They call him “The Maestro” because he brought an “Ocean of Soul” to Texas Southern University. Mr. Benjamin Butler of Texas Southern’s Music Department recently received the 2011 Champions Legacy Award from his alma mater. This distinguished honor is presented to individuals, who through their efforts while at the university, helped to create, foster and preserve the legacy of Tennessee State University.

When Benjamin Butler took over the Texas Southern University marching band years ago, his mandate was to “liven things up.” That he did, rechristening the band the Ocean of Soul and letting the band members loose with music and routines drawn from rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz and pop, in addition to the traditional military marches. The result was a lively, unpredictable combination of Soul.

Benjamin Butler will be honored during the KTSU Choice Evening of Jazz this Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.
