Jazz legend Joe Sample donated sixty thousand dollars ($60,000.00) to three Houston Catholic Schools on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at the studios of KTSU-FM radio station, located on the campus of Texas Southern University.  The principal for each school was on hand to receive the donation. The three schools are St. Mary of the Purification, St. Peter the Apostle and St. Francis of Assisi.   Dr. James Ward, Dean of the School of Communication, hosted the reception and stated that, “KTSU is a part of the School of Communication and supporting the Joe Sample Youth Organization is one of the initiatives that KTSU is involved in, which is in keeping with its educational mission”.  The station does a number of activities to support education. It provides five (5) scholarships for communication students, features The Next Generation Jazz Jam during April Jazz Appreciation Month which features middle, high school, and college jazz ensembles that perform in KTSU’s recording studio. In addition, these broadcasts are aired live on the station. Other outreach activities include station personnel who conduct tours and speaking engagements at area schools that target students desiring careers in broadcasting, which are just a few educational activities that the station is involved with.

In 2005, after returning to his home town of Houston, jazz pianist Joe Sample created the non-profit Joe Sample Youth Organization, Inc. (JSYO) to raise funds for his childhood school, Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School and other Catholic Schools in inner city Houston by organizing the annual JSYO Henriette Delille Legacy concert.  The concert was held in September 2011 at the Galveston Opera House in Galveston, Texas.  In the four years that he has been doing the concert, the Joe Sample Youth Organization has donated $210,000 to the inner city Catholic Schools in Houston.  The JSYO is already planning its next concert which will be held in September 2013 at the Galveston Opera House in Galveston, Texas.
